Prevent Silverfish from Coming into your Home this Winter

Your home in Virginia Beach is the perfect place to attract silverfish. Silverfish prefer temperate climates of around 70-85 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity levels around 50-75 percent. Sound familiar?

Learn methods of how to get rid of silverfish and silverfish infestations in your home. Learn what food sources they have, why you have silverfish in your home in the first place, how to keep them from entering your home, and whether they are harmful to humans.

  • 1/2-3/4 inch long, usually silver in color, with little scales
  • Two long front antennae and a three-prong tail, all used for sensory detail
  • Carrot-shaped (tapered), flat body
  • Many legs allow them to run very fast, and they have a wavy, fishlike movement pattern
  • Nocturnal and elusive
  • Often confused with firebrats, which are identical except for the color and some habits

Bug Facts to Help Eliminate Silverfish

Silverfish are attracted to moist places near an abundant food source, so your home in Virginia Beach. You might have seen them crawling out of drains or sinks or around a leaky pipe. Some people see them crawl out of the cracks and crevices around a window sill since that gives them access to the protein-based glues in the walls.

Silverfish are omnivores. They prefer protein, sugars, and starches. They eat dead insects, including other silverfish, plant cellulose (a kind of carbohydrate that humans can't digest), and a variety of human foods. So you could wake up early one morning to find a piece of bread you left out the night before covered in them.

In a household, they eat books, protein-based or sugar-based glues from wallpaper or the insides of walls, other items with cellulose and glue such as cardboard boxes, and natural textiles like cotton, silk, or rayon. This is why you might have a shirt in your drawer with synthetic fibers that is completely unaffected, while a pair of cotton jeans directly next to it shows signs of damage.

Common Areas to Find Silverfish

  • Attics, (especially shake roof attics because of the moisture and dead insects accumulated there for silverfish to feed on)
  • Crawl spaces
  • Bathrooms, sinks, drains
  • Around leaky pipes

Are Silverfish Dangerous?

Short answer, no. However, they can leave behind their scales and debris from other insects they've eaten. Eventually, this debris can cause allergic reactions. Silverfish do not bite and don't carry disease.

They typically don't crawl on people, but they do feed on skin and hair follicles we shed, so there is a chance you could find them on you one night, but it's not likely.

Most likely, you'll find them in your food, like flour or oats or bread that's been left out. Or you can find holes or notches in clothes or books.

Silverfish Facts and Other Reasons why they are a Nuisance Pest

  • No wings, so they crawl into cracks
  • Damage books, clothes, wallpaper
  • Live a long time, usually around 3 years
  • Females lay 1-3 eggs per day, and eggs hatch after 4-6 weeks. Nymphs quickly reach sexual maturity and start laying eggs rapidly.
  • Under ideal conditions, silverfish populations can grow explosively.

Silverfish Deterrents and Silverfish Control

  • Seal cracks and crevices around doors, windows, sill plates, foundation seams, and entry gaps for electrical, gas, or water piping.
  • Dehumidify commonly moist areas: leaky pipes, attics and shake roofs, areas around kitchen appliances like stoves, washing machines, and refrigerators.
  • Vacuum often to scare them out of their hiding places and clean up scales
  • Check items that enter your home, like boxes, plastic bags, books, etc.
  • Natural deterrents like boric acid and diatomaceous earth. (Use caution during application. These substances could be harmful if inhaled. Don't apply them near an air vent or heat duct and keep them out of reach of children and pets.)
  • Some people report that over-the-counter products have worked great, such as sticky traps or other deterrents.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
