5 Tips to Prevent a Termite Invasion

1. Proper Woodpile Storage

If it’s wood, termites eat it, which means any piles of firewood or lumber in your yard put your home at risk.

Properly taking care of your lumber and firewood could save you thousands in the long run. Wood that touches or leans against your home could be a significant threat against your house.

On a metal platform raised at least 1 foot off the ground, place all your firewood and lumber 20 feet away from the house. You can also cover the wood with a plastic wrapping or tarp to prevent moisture accumulation or damage, which will also attract termites.

2. Poor Drainage and Water Damage Repair

Some types of termites are attracted only to wood with moisture damage, so be sure to check for and repair leakages both inside and outside your home.

A few places inside your house you should check include water pipe access cabinets, such as those beneath sinks, and other utility cabinets. Also, check for water damage around toilets, shower drains, sinks, and anywhere water could cause damage.

Outside your house, any places where water doesn’t drain properly could cause a problem with termites. Clean out your gutters of all dirt, leaves, twigs, or other debris. Formosan termites are especially likely to set up a new colony in a clogged gutter.

All downspouts should keep water away from the home foundation, so you might need water drain pipes to assist in proper drainage. Your landscaping may need modifications if water pools in the yard or drains toward the house.

3. Tree Branch and Bush Trimming

Any branches or leaves that touch the house can provide termites with easy access to the house, so trim bushes at least 1 foot away from the siding of the house and 3 feet away from each other.

Any branches that come closer than 5 feet from the house or overhang above the roof should be cut away.

4. Wooden Debris Cleanup

All branches or leaves that have fallen could create a risk for your home, so be sure to clear it away as soon as you can. Branches or leaf piles that touch or are near the siding pose a significant termite risk.

5. Look to the Professionals for Permanent Solutions

These steps are excellent ways to help protect your home, but they don’t keep termites away.

Some homeowners will try to treat their home on their own, using low-risk termite killers like food-grade diatomaceous earth, boric acid, and termite bait systems for DIY termite extermination and control.

We don’t recommend treating termites without professional help. Although there are resources out there that could allow you to control termites on your own, we recommend calling the professionals for termite prevention and control.

Fox Pest Control has the proper tools and experience you’ll need to keep termites away for good. Our Pest Pros aren’t just professional termite hunters, though. When you call Fox, you’re joining a family that cares about you and your peace of mind.

Not sure if you have an infestation? Don’t worry — we offer free termite inspections and estimates for residents of Virginia Beach and surrounding areas.

So next time you think pest control, think Fox Pest control, who gets the job done right the first time. Because No Bugs is Simply Better.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
