4 Kinds of Household Ants

Having marched their way onto every continent except Antarctica, ants are a worldwide pest problem for almost all homeowners. Hardy and nearly unstoppable, ants can live almost anywhere, including the North Pole!

Under the best of circumstances, these pests are a nuisance. At worst, they can damage property, contaminate food, sting, and bite.

These four common kinds of ants might come in and around your home this spring. Plus, we've added a few things you can do to keep them away.

1. Pavement Ant

Usually found in cracks in the pavement or between rocks, these ants are extremely annoying but typically just a nuisance. They don't cause damage and they aren't especially dangerous.

Luckily, pavement ants are fairly responsive to homeowners’ efforts to get rid of them. Sealing your food in airtight containers, including pet food, can make a big difference in getting rid of them. Seal common ant entry points using silicone caulk, door sweeps, and other hardware items, filling cracks and crevices around your home. Focus on gaps around utility and A/C unit pipes, gaps around doors and windows, window wells, and cracks around the foundation.

Cleaning frequently can also help prevent pavement ants from setting up shop in your home. Although ants aren't attracted to filth and grime, frequent cleaning prevents them from hiding, finding food crumbs, or getting comfortable.

2. Odorous House Ant

Emitting a nasty smell when crushed, these ants are aptly named and can cause serious problems for just about any homeowner besides their stink. Like most ants, they eat sugary or greasy foods or even meat.

Because of their thousands of egg-laying queens and their ability to divide into hundreds or thousands of subcolonies, this type of ant is much more difficult to eradicate for homeowners. If even one reproductive queen gets away, the entire colony could restart all over again.

It's always a good idea to use the same preventive methods mentioned above. However, these ants are much less responsive to home remedies than pavement ants, including baits and traps, so it's a good idea to involve the professionals as soon as possible if you discover this kind of ant in the house.

3. Crazy Ant

This kind of ant gets their name from their long legs and the uneven way they walk. They’re also called “crazy” because of their rare ability to leave foraging lines to look for food by themselves.

They also cause insanity inside the house with their gigantic colonies and hundreds of reproductive queens. These ants can cause thousands of dollars in damage to electronic equipment by crawling into the wiring, shorting out the electrical currents and damaging TVs, radios, computers, and even toasters.

4. Carpenter Ant

With their huge jaws that they use to carve through wood, carpenter ants are probably the most destructive ant species. Although they don’t eat the wood like termites, carpenter ants still can cause as much damage to a home as termites.

Despite the fact that they only have one queen, they are no less difficult to eradicate. To protect their single queen, the main colony stays somewhere in the ground outside while a satellite colony carves through your house and causes huge amounts of wood damage.

The biggest difference between carpenter ants and other ant species is their size. While normal ants are typically about 1/8 inch long, carpenter ant workers are typically about 1/2 inch long.

What’s the Difference Between Carpenter Ants and Termites?

  • Ants have a thin “waist” connecting their abdomen with their body. Termites have a thick waist.
  • Ants have a bend in their antennae. Termite antennae are straight and made up of tiny beads.
  • When they have wings, ants have four wings of two different lengths, and termites have four wings of equal length.

Get Rid of Ants For Good—Professional Ant Control

Many people want to get rid of pests on their own. Although there are plenty of products to help you, like diatomaceous earth and ant bait, the best option is to call the professionals. Treatments on your own bring mixed results, and many people end up calling the professionals anyway.

When you call Fox, you aren’t just hiring a professional. You’re joining a family that cares.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
