3 Home Remedies to Get Rid of Cockroaches

Prepare for roach infestations, because roaches are some tough bugs to eliminate. But we've got the tips and tricks you can do yourself to protect your Virginia Beach home.

German cockroaches are one type of roach population that populate incredibly fast. Or American roaches are your problem, with their 1-2 inch long size and reddish-brown bodies skittering around your kitchen.

German roach, American, Oriental, or Hissing roach, no matter what kind they are, we want them gone just as much as you do. Who wants them drinking your water, leaving their exoskeleton molts and feces all over the place that can cause allergic reactions, stinking up the house with their musty smell, or contaminating your food.

Any roommate that did one of the things a roach does would get slapped into jail faster than they came in. They leave egg cases all over the place, gorge themselves on vomit-worthy food sources, and hide their poop in their hiding places. The most insulting thing above all, they don't pay rent.

That's why we've got techniques you can do on your own to kill roaches and make sure every crack and crevice of your home is clean. Follow our tips to evict and get rid of cockroaches today.

Household Cockroach Elimination

1. Block Roach Entry Points

Roach populations can explode overnight because they can lay dozens of eggs at once and survive in harsh environments. Your home isn't a harsh environment, so even a single female with eggs in your home could lead to massive numbers in your home in a matter of months. This is why you need to block every entry point you can and carefully examine everything that enters your home, every package and every bag.

It's true; you're probably not going to find and block every crack and hole cockroaches can squeeze and wriggle through. As hard as it is, doing it will help reduce the number of possible entry spots they might be using.

The most common entry points that you can seal up with silicone caulking and similar hardware include the spaces and cracks around windows and doors, along the foundation and sill plates, and around utility pipes. Some siding that's closer to the ground with cracks and gaps might also be possible entry locations.

Install door sweeps and weather-stripping around your home will also be helpful. Also, ensure every exterior door, garage door, and shed doors seal well when shut. All of these measures can make a significant difference in the number of pests, not just roaches, that enter your home.

2. Sanitation Methods

Remove Food Sources

Cockroaches are one of the few animals that can survive for months without food and between ten to almost thirty days without water. This allows them to survive in extremely harsh conditions. Their cuisine includes everything we eat, from cheese and salami to crackers and cookies. Still, they also can consume more disgusting things, like human waste, blood, other cockroaches, discarded skin and hair, other insects, and numerous other food sources.

If they don't have anything to eat, why would roaches want to enter your home in the first place? Why would they stay if they did come? So make your food and water inaccessible by placing all your food in sealed, hard-sided containers with a lid, not plastic bags, and put them on a high shelf. Make sure all the pipes in your home remain in good repair and that attics, basements, crawl spaces, and other areas prone to moisture buildup are dry and well-ventilated.

Clean food preparation areas after every meal, and make sure to clean up every crumb after eating. Never eat anywhere other than the kitchen, because it's much easier to miss a morsel here or there if it's hidden somewhere in the carpet. Empty the garbage cans every night so that roaches have nothing at all that they can steal. Consider purchasing garbage bags that include a seal to keep the roaches out.

Eliminate Hiding Spots

Cockroach survival depends on how effectively and quickly they find harborages. If you continuously sanitize all the regular places they hide, they are less likely to breed, leave their fecal matter around, lay ootheca cases, or discard their molts in areas you can't find them. Their survival instincts powerfully force them to stay hidden, even if it means going thirsty and hungry for a while. Always wear personal protective gear when looking for and cleaning roach hiding spots.

Even if you see one cockroach skittering through your kitchen, there is no question that you have a significant infestation. Cockroaches crawl on top of one another if they have to, but they prefer not to touch one another when hiding. So if one comes running in the open, it's only because the others forced it out of the regular hiding spots. If you clean these hiding spots, they're much less likely to live comfortably in your home.

The best roach hiding places in your kitchen are around, inside, under, and behind all the appliances: refrigerators, freezers, bread makers, toasters, ovens, stoves, microwaves, blenders, mixers, food processors, and all other appliances. Even the smallest leftover crumb could attract a roach, so clean each of these thoroughly. Consider purchasing an automatic vacuum cleaner that can run at night when they are most active.

What Do They Leave Behind?

  • Egg cases
  • Discarded molts
  • Fecal matter
  • Musty smell

3. Products for Cockroach Management

Use these products to kill roaches wherever you find them. Find these products online or at your local hardware store or garden and farm supply location.

Insect growth regulators prevent cockroaches from reproducing and growing to adulthood, which makes them an extremely effective deterrent for roach populations of any size.

Boric acid is used in plenty of cleaning chemicals used for laundry detergent, window cleaning, and other home products. It's devastating to anything with an exoskeleton. You can purchase it in a container as a dust that you can apply in areas you usually find them, but be careful not to put it in places where children, pets, or the elderly might inhale it or come in contact with it. Since it can be harmful, so avoid putting it in or near air vents.

Diatomaceous earth attaches to the exoskeleton and dehydrates insects, including cockroaches, until they perish of thirst. Keep in mind that roaches can live for as long as three weeks without water, so results might require some time to work correctly.

Gel bait and bait stations are an excellent way to eradicate smaller cockroach populations, but they can be expensive if you're dealing with more significant numbers. These can be purchased online and are often included with roach kits that sometimes contain boric acid and other roach killer solutions as well. They eat a little bit of it without realizing it will kill them, since it is slow-acting, and they might eat a large amount of it before perishing.
